Introduction: DIY CNC String Trimmer Rack

If you are like me and have too many string trimmers I have the perfect DIY solution to help you organize your workshop. I have designed a string trimmer mount in Fusion 360 that holds three string trimmers.

Since I am away at school I cannot take any more pictures than what I have on my phone, so I used Fusion 360's animate and render feature to help illustrate the process as best I could.

Supplies

Materials:

  • 1-- 30" 2x4
  • 2-- 3/4" by at least 12" x 30" sheets of plywood
  • 10-- 1 1/2" wood screws
  • 10-- 2 1/2" wood screws
  • Wood Glue (optional)

Tools:

  • A CNC router.
  • A table or circular saw.
  • A drill
  • A 3/16" drill bit
  • A tape measure
  • A level

Step 1: CNC the Main Pieces

First things first, you are going to want to use a CNC to cut out the main pieces of the mount. I used a DXF file I uploaded into V-Carve (attached to this step is the .svg). From there I set the job parameters for my specific CNC then I was ready to cut!

Note: The overall size of the part should be 12" x 30", since it is an SVG you will likely have to rescale it (I could not get the DXF to upload). Also as mentioned before I do not have a video of me cutting the actual part so I uploaded on of me cutting something for another project.

Step 2: Cutting the Support Pieces

This mount was designed to be mounted to a wall, from a 2x4 ripped in half to form a square.

  • First cut a 2 x 4 to 30"
  • Then cut it in half as pictured.

Step 3: Predrilling the Main Pieces

Now you want to predrill the main pieces so you can attach it to the 2x4 you cut up. For this step you will want to use a 3/16" drill bit.

You can drill the holes however you would like to finish the job but this is how I did it.

  • First mark the main pieces by drawing a line 3/4" in from the flat spine.
  • Then from either end mark three inches in--these will be your first two holes.
  • Now put a mark at the midpoint of the two holes on the line that is 3/4" in. This will be your third hole.
  • Finally, mark the midpoint between the hole you just marked and and the ones you drew 3" in on either side--these will be your last two holes.

Step 4: Putting It All Together

Attach the pieces together with the 1 1/2" wood screws (see video), be sure to add wood glue if you want an extra strong joint.

Step 5: Mounting It

Congrats you've made it to the final step, now you have to mount it on the wall. I have found that for my trimmers 48" inches worked well as a distance between the two brackets which is great because it means that I can screw both brackets to studs without needing drywall anchors.

  • Locate two studs 48" apart at the desired mounting location.
  • Using the 2 1/2" wood screws attach the half 2x4 to the stud, I recommend at least three screws per bracket. Once you have decided where you want to mount it you can predrill the half 2x4 to make mounting it on the wall easier--just make sure you don't hit the screws you used to mount the plywood to the half 2x4.
  • Once you have one screw in use a level to make sure that it is perfectly verticle.
  • To mount the second bracket use a tape measure or a level to make sure it is aligned with the first and repeat the above steps.

Step 6: You're All Done

Now you can mount your string trimmers and admire your work.
