Introduction: Mount for Car Emblem on Bike

About: I make things

I found a Ford logo from a car at an antique store, and I thought it would look good on my electric bike!

NOTE: Video below goes into more detail about process and difficulties (warning: bit of swearing)

Supplies

-Ford Logo (or any car emblem)

-Small piece of scrap wood

-(Black) Spray paint

-Metal Strapping

-Small screws

-Zip-Ties

-Rust remover (I used vinegar)

Tools:

-Saw

-Sandpaper

-Screwdriver

-Drill

Step 1: Prepare Logo

I had to remove some green rust on the logo first, so I soaked it in Apple Cider Vinegar and let it sit for a day. All the rust melted off, which was good. I had to sand some gunk off that was left after the rust was gone, too. There was a lot of corrosion, so I couldn't polish it perfectly, but it turned out good.

Step 2: Preparing the Wood

I took the block of wood and drilled the holes for the pins that are in the logo (all the way through - see step 4 for reason) (I used a 7/32 inch drill bit for the holes, but as this logo and its pin sizes must be from decades ago, I doubt this detail will help). Then, I slotted the emblem in and traced its shape before cutting it out. I used a manual saw, but a jigsaw probably would have been much (!) faster. To make it fit the curved profile of the emblem, I took some low-grit sandpaper to smooth it out.

Step 3: Paint

I spray-painted the wood black by mounting it on a branch driven into the ground so I could paint all sides at once. I don't know if there's a better way to do this, but this was easiest for me.

Step 4: Putting Bracket on Back

I took some scrap steel strapping and snipped a piece off, which I then screwed into the wood using the same holes that the pins are in (#12 size screws) (I did not have two identical screws of this size so that's why they don't match). I made sure to make the gap about a pancake's width wide so that zip-ties could get through, but not too wide so that the logo would stay upright easier.

Step 5: Mounting Logo on Bike

I then used zip-ties to attach the emblem to the handlebars of the bike. This is a simple project, but I really like how it turned out! I think it gives the bike personality.

Step 6: Video

Here's a video on how I did it, along with some mistakes that cropped up!
