Step 1: Roasting and First Blend
Making peanut butter in a blender is really easy, as long as the blender is strong enough.
First, let's talk about the peanuts. You can use raw or roasted peanuts. Salted or unsalted.
It's a good idea to roast the raw peanuts because it adds to the flavor. But it isn't necessary. Or of course, you can use already roasted peanuts.
If you want to roast them, add the shelled peanuts to a sheet pan. Set the heat to 300F/148C in your oven and roast the peanuts for about 15 minutes. Allow them to cool completely before proceeding to the first blend.
Add the peanuts to the blender, depending on the size of your blender I don't recommend adding any more than 3 to 4 cups of peanuts.
Then add any additional ingredients like the oil and honey.
Start the blender on the lowest setting and gradually bring it up to the highest setting. Use the tamper to press down the peanuts on the sides towards the bottom. Do this for about 30 seconds or so.
Then open it up and press more down with a spoon or spatula.
Step 2: Final Blend
At this point, you can also give it a taste and see if you would like to add a bit more salt and or honey. You may want to add more oil as well depending on how creamy you want it.
Replace the lid and then mix again for another 30 seconds or so. Depending on your blender you may only need one blend of a straight 1 minute. For other blenders, you may need to do it in phases.
Step 3: Finished Peanut Butter
Scoop the peanut butter out and place it in a bowl or something like a mason jar. There you go! Homemade creamy peanut butter for all your peanut butter needs. :) Enjoy!
You may print the creamy peanut butter recipe here if you want.
Step 4: No Blender?
If you don't have a blender but do have a food processor you can make peanut butter in that as well. In this Instructable I show you how to make it in the food processor, but it is pretty similar.
Step 5: Video Tutorial
Now watch those steps in action with this video tutorial.

When COVID struck I was in Pakistan and we wanted to make some peanutbutter cookies. The peanutbutter in Pakistan is VERY sweet and so different from the organic peanutbutter I usually get at Costco (peanuts, and sea salt only). So, we bought pounds of peanuts, roasted them just like this 'ible, but they were SO dry! I ended up adding some olive oil to get it to a spreadable consistency, pinch of salt, and skipped the sugar. Lesson learned: not all peanuts are alike! These peanuts seemed way drier than roasted peanuts we have in the states.
This pulverizing method also works for other nuts - just may take a bit longer to get it creamy.

The beauty of making peanut butter yourself, you get to decide what goes in it. Yes for sure, other nut butter can be made this way too. Glad you were able to buy raw peanuts in Pakistan when you were there.

Be careful you can burn out your blender doing this.

Not with the Vitamix. It is made specifically to do things like nut butter. That is why a high powdered blender is recommended. Cheaper blenders, yes, you run a risk. Better to use a food processor.

In my Luddite realm peanut butter requires only roasted peanuts and salt if the roasted peanuts are unsalted.Peanuts and peanut oil are nutritious foods for those not allergic to peanuts. Most of the big selling so called peanut butters are adulterated with sugars and have no peanut oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil is substituted. Read the label for all the adulterants.Even many of the commercial ones labelled "natural" are adulterated with unneeded added products. My choice of commercial peanut butter is Smuckers, nothing listed but peanuts and salt.
I make peanut and other nut butters (the majority of nuts contain enough natural oils for blending into butters) in a standard blender of uncertain age. The key for me is that the blender jar has a removable bottom..

Yes you can make nut butter with just the nut. All the other things are optional.

I do this with cashews and the small food processing bowl of a stick blender. I only use about half a cup or so of nuts - enough for a couple of sandwiches. My wife buys raw cashews in bulk - so cheap & easy. Canola oil, no honey.
Delicious.
